First win, with High Elf Rogue

    Hi All,

Finally achieved first win, in Vanilla 3.2 with High Elf, Rogue, after about 5 months trying.

I had excellent luck. I decided to go for as clean a win as possible, and so did not stair scum in the early levels, which I had taken to doing as after many deaths bored of them. I was rewarded with finding Careth Asdriag at cl15, dl15, first time on the level. With that I pressed on down to dl20 looking for the basic resistances, and fairly soon found Arvedui, Dal-I-thalion, a rod of healing, and then an amulet of WeaponMastery. I pressed on down as far as I dared, not stopping to max stats.

Most enjoyable was cleaning out a Demon pit with a Scythe of Slicing of *Slay Demon*.

Towards the end, I had to bail out from fights with various high level uniques such as Sauron and Cantoras, until I found more artifacts to improve melee and rearranged artifacts to maximise hp. I went into battle with Morgoth with 3 *healings*, 3 healings & 2 rods of healing, which turned out to be exactly right amount. As in my last encounter things got a bit sticky when he summonsed too many helpers. I teleported myself out, and let him catchup with me for a further whacking.

I'd say 3.2 is easier than previous versions, and much easier than moria... but in a good way - plenty of interest, different techniques to try, but not months of grind. Great game, thx to maintainers, & for running this site.

    Congrats!

Now what's next? Another class? Ironman? Randarts? A variant?
So far I've only varied classes - started as Fighter, then Priest, now on Rouge track but have less spare time right now and haven't survived past dl 50 yet.

I tried Ironman when I switched to Priest. I really like the Ironman style but playing Ironman with a class I hadn't already won with did not work out too well so I gave that up for later. Hmmm... but come to think of it, now that I have won as Priest it's probably time for a new Ironman race!

Randarts are... well random. Actually I quite like randarts it but I would not say they are better. You will get surprised both for good and bad and may very well end up with three useless artifact rings instead of the guaranteed triplet with immunities which I find handy against e.g. the Tarrasque.

Variants seem interesting too, but with a job, a family and a sumo robot project on the side I figure swapping gameplay with learning a new variant is not yet for me.

    /Mathias

Thx , I'm going to hang up my boots for the summer - was spending too much time on this, and needed to get a win so I could stop (for a bit). I used high elf rogue as thought that would work in melee style, but taking advantage of monster detection and find treasure spells. If I come back to this in the winter, I'd like to go for a faster win using more of stealth/deep dive & missile, probably still using rogue, but maybe human.
