YASD - the most frustrating death in the world

I was a clvl ~10 priest, down about 500' when something burnt up my one and only priest book.

No worries though, I just need to WoR back and get another one but - damn - I still haven't found any ?WoR.

No problem, I'll walk back to the surface. It shouldn't take too long. I start slowly making my way up. I get hungry around 400' and realise that I only have one food ration left. I eat it and continue on upwards. The stairs are just taking forever to find. I start panicking a bit as I'm nearly hungry and still six more levels to go.

Amazing luck, I find a copy of Godly Insights at 300' (which I've never ever seen before), but that doesn't help with the food problem. Carrying on, I get hungry again at 250'. I start stair scumming a bit (which I'd never normally do, but I'm in a tough situation here). Can't find any stairs, can't find any food. I eat a couple un-id'ed mushrooms I was saving, but they don't do much to stave of starvation.

I die of starvation at 50'.

Note to self: Next time, remember to pack extra food.

That used to be my most frequent cause of death. lol I'd dive really deep and something would burn up my ?WoR.

I don't think I've ever died from starvation

Always carry at least 5 rations and pick up the food you find, it can be dropped again if you find something more valuable (In the lower levels, that is)

I only ever carry normal rations of food and/or mushrooms of restoring, but I eat slime molds, elvish waybread and any non-damaging mushrooms straight off the floor. There are times when my character eats so much it's more like Pac-Man than Angband.

Also, my Dunadan Warrior winner was gorged for almost his entire battle with Morgoth thanks to overdosing on potions.

You should carry waybreads and leave the rations for the rats.

If you were at depth 10, lacking the second priest book, without WoR, and without enough food to walk home... how was that the RNG's fault?

True that. I normally just dive at about clvl = dlvl, reading every scroll I find. The length of my first dive is normally determined by when I eventually stumble across a ?WoR.

                  I like your diving plan.

I guess next time just stock up on food some more!

I have, just the once. Drank an unID'd potion just after eating my last ration - it was Salt Water. Had no food and no potions. Recalled home but died on the way to the general store.

Now I make sure I have food available when I drink unIDd potions (at least until I've IDd Salt Water).

Yeah, an early Salt Water potion was partially responsible for my starvation - though I still had ~6 rations left at the time, so I wasn't too worried about it.

How about THIS...character around level 8, death knight (Zangband), on the very first trip down into the dungeon. Only had one WoR and it got burned up so I was heading for the surface and got a special feeling on level 4 or 5...I figured it had to be the Phial. So I cruised around the level a while looking, to no avail. I had brought two scrolls of Teleportation for emergencies and already used one at a lower depth.

I can't recall the details but I think I might have read an un-ID'd scroll and it turned out to be Summon Monsters. Nothing too tough for me to handle if I could get them lined up in a hallway, but they were pounding me bad enough that I had to teleport, using my last scroll.

I ended up in a room with a small dead-end hallway going off it and some green jellies that I didn't want to go near because of the acid, so I killed them with bolts, but that took a while. Meanwhile I used up my last food ration...can you tell where this is going?

Anyway, I realized there were no visible doors out of the small area I was in. Started looking for one...no luck...poked around a bunch of the granite walls (that was all there was)...started to get hungry...got scared. There was another room literally one granite wall away, but I didn't have a shovel or anything...but I couldn't find any other doors for God knows what reason so I started trying to dig.

Kept digging still I died of starvation.

Me, too. Marrow, my half Troll warrior, died inches from the general store. It was pitiful.

I never go past dL4 without at least 3 ?WoR, I usually carry 5-7 of them. I usually die in much stupider ways..
