Whelp, he's dead. Tried to take on Uriel, with the following results:
    Code:
    (Current HP: ~950)
Uriel, Angel of Fire breathes fire.
    *** LOW HITPOINT WARNING! ***
    (Current HP: 410)
You failed to use the wand [of Teleport Other] properly.
Uriel, Angel of Fire breathes fire.
    You die.
A very strange game. I dove to the point that my speed was no longer sufficient to let me slaughter everything in my path, and then discovered that telepathy and a decent melee weapon were nowhere to be found. Though, shortly before dying, I discovered these boots:
    Code:
The Pair of Iron Shod Boots of Olain [4,+17] (+2)
         +2 intelligence, wisdom, attack speed.
         Provides immunity to lightning.
         Provides resistance to acid, fire.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
         Feather Falling.

When aimed, it drains up to 90 hit points of life from a target cr
         eature.
Takes 270 to 299 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 85.0%
So hey, I managed to find something better than boots of +9 Speed/Stealth.

I posted the death dump so you can admire his gear. Aside from the boots, he has an acid-branded longsword with +3 attacks, gloves of oh-thank-gods-you-cover-important-resistances (first source of blindness resistance all game, second source of confusion resistance after a Magi amulet), and a rather nice beaked axe that he was using until he found the longsword on the dive he died in.

    I think I'll try a mage next.

In TOME 2.X the Alchemist class started with a potion of detonations. As alchemists had no starting spells and were weak in melee/shooting as well, the starting strategy was to find the biggest monster you could one-shot with your detonations potion and gain enough levels to get a more survivable level of hit points and fighting skill. Usually that meant hunting for lizard kings or weaker hyrdras in the water areas around Bree (the starting town).

*Ding* Sweet, now I'm an apprentice.

I would have some fun first. Chase demons and provoke angel explosions.

And the madness just doesn't stop. While reading those ?DeepDescent, I popped into a room with an ancient gold dragon, killed him...and got Blue Dragon Scale Mail of Speed (+9). He's level 30 and his speed is +25. I'm starting to wonder if there's a bug in the current build making nice drops more common...

OK, its not Vanilla, but The Plain Gold Ring in Hengband is worth something like 10,000,000xp for the kill. I've had ninjas go from CL40 to CL50 killing that guy. Of course, most characters just can't kill this monster, no matter how powerful they become.

Happens to me about once every 6 games or so. Then again there's the guy who got 32 levels with his first kill.

I did, however, once get 5 levels from a single kill in a legit game ... at cl21. I had a 5d3 randart whip with KILL_UNDEAD, and I took out Adunaphel who was quite a long way OOD. I don't know how often that happens to people but it's the first time I've ever got more than two levels in one go after cl10.

That's why I wouldn't mind going even with a whip. However, an extra couple !CCW or ?teleport or stack of ?dObj could make a huge difference.

Sadly, that was a mistake. You should have sold the warhammer and bought the best weapon giving three blows and some enchant scrolls. Even if no enchant scrolls for sale, three blows with an unenchanted rapier would be almost as good and you would be better off because you could buy a lot of other consumables with the cash. I'd have sold it even if the only 3 blow weapon available was a whip.

Usually you don't have much of a choice when Fang or Grip comes at you on dlevel 1...
