      Ouch.

Had that happen...not very often, but at times. So, when I take out a unique that I *want* gone...whether because it's dangerous (Gabriel, Azrael, Huan, Tarrasque), annoying as heck (Saruman), or due to past bad experience (Mim)...or if I've found either a crucial spellbook or very valuable artifact (Ringil, Bard, ring of power, etc)....SAVE! Right now.

I would also tend to save after a dragon pit like that, probably after checking all the drops. That pit will take a while to clear, and then of course there's all the IDs. Don't want to repeat that.

I have the obsessive saving tic down from my pre-Angband RPG days. I save the game insanely often. I also tend to play on a laptop without a battery, so I have lost progress before.

ctrl-s is easy and will save you much grief, especially with unstable versions.

I once got one of the "multihued" dragon pits in zangband that I thought would be piece of cake. Well, zang is a bit different. Only WGoBalance and GWoChaos there.

Found zillion artifacts from remains after one quite epic fight.

Ok that explains your question. It did sound weird that you asked that command, you had to have found multiple chest by now...

There is a bug in vanilla angband which causes exactly that. I have encountered it too. Sometimes when there is a lot of drops (like clearing a dragon pit, just like that one) and chest appear from chests some of them turns impossible to open or disarm (you don't even get a chance to do that). What helps then is to pick it up, walk one step and drop it back to ground. Now it magically has been fixed and can again be opened.

If I interpret correctly, it is due to the fact that the "o"pen command defaults to the first chest, if there is more than one on the same spot. So empty chests (and even squelched empty chests) can get in the way.

That squeched part might explain that. It only happens when there are lots of stuff already in ground and multiple chests.
