It was by far the best drop I have ever gotten from him, and I hadn't even entered the dungeon yet.

Doesn't beat my best find. It was HA +4 WIS dagger from Battle Scarred Vet playing Priest.

I was very lucky with that. Pseudo-ID was very fast with Priests even back then. I was going to weapon shop to sell that and was very close to entrance when it was pseudo-ID:d as {good}. Destination change: Temple. Buy ID. Use it. Be very happy for a while.

My mage found a longbow of extra might +16 or so off maggot once, that was quite nice.

My first trip into the dungeon was fun

Whoa! That one is a winner I think considering how long that is a usable weapon. Something like BoS +10 could beat it, but I haven't (yet) seen anybody getting that.

OTOH "shoot to kill every <dlvl 15 monster without bothering to melee" -weapon is close to beat even BoS.

Thinking of it, Sling of Buckland +2 would be pretty ultimate starting weapon. Beats just about anything in melee-category because it helps against putting you to danger.

My best V character ever found a rod of acid balls on DL1 once. Not exactly a traditional weapon, but it proved to be effective for a good long time.
