I finally got my first winner after years and years of playing. It's only the second character i've played with version 3.1.2v2 and I almost jumped through the roof when I finally smashed the big M's skull in with my MOD
I think the quiver makes the biggest difference between versions. Because of it I was able to carry both the randart sling and the might crossbow for most of the game and alternate depending on what I was fighting and the ammo that I had available. Once I had the cap with Telepathy and +1 shots I was machine gunning down uniques at will for the rest of the game.
As usual with my randart games I had a slow start until I found a pair of BOS +7, a blessed mace with Telepathy and then the two missle weapons. After that the big find was the crazy randart armour that covered almost every resist and meant I didn't really have to juggle any artifacts. From then on it was dive (stop - check any level with a feeling), dive (stop - check any level with a feeling), dive
I didn't find the Holy Avenger MOD until I was on Level 100 hunting Morgoth (in a vault) but it did help speed up the final fight. After softening him up with slay evil missiles I basically bashed him to death while destructing his summons. I was surprised how much I used the staff of speed by simply recharging it when I needed it.
Love the game, I play it far too much, and a big thank you to everyone who posts on these forums for the tips.
