One exception: should you ever find Seeker Arrows of Holy Might, I'd suggest saving them for Morgoth.

Or indeed any arrows or seeker arrows of Slay Evil. Save them all for Morgy. You're unlikely to find more than three or four stacks all game, so they're worth keeping.

Indeed. I would say though that Arrows of Slay Evil can be used prior to the endgame if desperate, but they are rare enough that you should always try to use some other ego-ammo instead.
My first winner found The One Ring without EVER finding any Seeker Arrows of Holy Might.

Well, I followed the advice to wander down to dlvl 50, but rBlind and rConf are still reluctant to appear, and I'm starting to worry about rNether as well (teleported away Azriel because I didn't want to find out the hard way how much damage his nether balls do unresisted). More speed would be very nice too, but that's not quite as much of a gaping hole as it used to be, thanks to a certain 4d5 longsword. I could also use equipment with more INT ( my fail rates are not pleasant to behold) and ideally another point of CON. (My 722 HP don't look as impressive at this level as they used to...) I do have rPoison and a half-decent longbow, though, and, having found Tenser's, can enchant my ammo.

          This leaves me two questions:

          1. Can I go any deeper, or am I fated to wander dlvl 50 until rConf and rNether show up?
          2. I have a Scroll of Acquirement I've been saving for a while. What's a good level to use it?

The dump as always is here.

Scroll of Acquirement should be read immediatly (you don't want it to burn up by a fire hound attack or such).

I remember once spending 300K on one in the Black Market, recalling into a room full of Fire Hounds, and getting it burned up before I could read it. I think I may have said a bad word when that happened.

As others have said, use the scroll straight away. Plenty of decent artifacts are in depth at 2500'. On your other question, keep diving, definitely. Waiting around for anything to show up is asking for death-by-boredom. It's true that missing rconf is pretty awkward for a mage, but that should just make you choose your fights much more carefully (get out of LOS the moment a confuser shows up). Thinks ... you don't have perfect save, do you? That's a viable alternative to rconf if you get enough WIS. Then you only need to avoid melee confusers (titans et al.).

Finally, don't worry about rnether. It only protects you from 14% of the damage (ok that's a minimum but it's all you can rely on), so it's not really a big deal. If you have hold life you don't even take an xp hit - but even if you lack HL, xp is no longer really an issue.

Keep diving, choose your fights, and all sorts of useful kit will show up.

                Good luck,

However, if you are on a dungeon level, it might be a good idea to make sure you're well away from hounds, etc, first. The last Acq scroll I read produced a pair of hard leather boots that were immediately destroyed by a Fire Hound (a Fire Hound? At 3150'? Tsk)... oh well, at least I know they're weren't Feanor's...

Whenever probable ego but un-ID'd boots get destroyed, they're Slow Descent. That's what I tell myself anyway.

Thanks for all the help. The ?acquirement failed to produce anything very useful (gloves of slaying). I had been keeping it in my house, of course, away from hounds!

Since then, I've found some nice loot and gotten as far as level 71 (currently looking for Glaurung). Currently, my biggest challenges are high resistances and CON, as well as inventory space. Here's the dump; I would be greatful for any comments as to what I should do at this stage (and what stuff I can sell). I found some Seeker Arrows of Holy Might, which, as per instructions, are carefully salted away in my home; but *Healing* is proving reluctant to turn up. On the bright side, a Great Bile Wyrm just dropped the Arkenstone.

Any and all advice would be appreciated...

Oh, a new dilemma: Cesti of Power - +2 to Str and most importantly Con (drools) but aggravation. Is it worth it?

I think I would at least keep it in my inventory - if you encouter something really heavy you might swap. I saw in the dump that you had 812 HP without the Cesti - how many with the Cesti?

                          Cheers,

                          Peter.
