(it says that a 'small' investment in Perception gives pseudo ID, but I've got 20 points in it and don't have the effect) until much later leaving you with piles of [unknown] quality items you can't afford to ID. Lanterns don't seem to be sold in town either, or very very rarely.
Good in theory and potential but getting into is harder than it should be.
You dont state which race you playing. Skill points have a variable effect based on race which means that if a Giant those points in percetion are worth as a more perception race.

I was running a human, focusing mainly on dodge, perception and sorcery (spellcasting, magical power and wizardry) had around 15 points in swords for a dagger.

But i've abandoned that guy, running a dwarf poleaxe user now (dodge joust perception..misc points on spell resist, disarm, magic device) going a little better but still very tough because finding gear/money is so hard. I want to enjoy this game.

There are a few bugs in Sangband but it's definitely worth persevering.

My advice is to try a hobbit, as they have the best skills. They aren't that tough, so you need to be careful about melee, but they're good with missiles and throwing weapons. I tend to pump karate until I can survive melee easily and then work on other skills like burglary. If you check the skill matrix you might find that a different race has lower costs for the skills you want to use.

Perception does greatly increase your pseudo, but 20 isn't much. Get it up to around 50 and you'll notice the difference.
