    Dungeon of death

This is what I encountered today when I got to a 'superb' level on dng lvl 43. Almost did Leerjoy Jenkins and charged forward without thinkin for a second. Then I realized what there truly was waiting for me and almost s**t in my pants!

I think I'll have to make a backup save (although I really hate cheating) and see what balrogs are made of..

That's not really cheating, that's more like arena play.
There's almost no way that you'll make it through all those alive, with only 6 speed and 443 HP. Several of those monsters can breath for 500+ HP; in fact, with Azriel in the way you are unlikely to get to Lungorthin.

Just tunnel in from both ends until you reach blocking monsters, then destruct the rest and pick up the artifacts. At your strength, it's the only thing to do.

I just found a similar vault with my NetAngband Rogue at ~DL25. The monster list went on for 3 or 4 pages with a lot of way OOD monsters. I'd never seem anything like it before. Luckily, I was without food or recall and hungry at the time, so I was more interested in survival than treasure. That hunger surely saved my life.

I find the opposite--when I play Angband hungry I tend to make mistakes and lose quickly.

Me too. I also die instantly if I am distracted by anything, like TV or parenting.

I think Buzzkill was meant that his character was hungry and without food and since he also didn't have recall he had to stairscum his way to the surface as soon as possible.

My rule of thumb (which I never follow) is to save and quit as soon as I see something like that. Good luck!

How dare you (not really ). I would NEVER stair scum. I'm a strong advocate of eliminating stair/town scumming from the game through any number of various mechanisms. I did manage to find a WoR eventually and... this guy is still alive!!!

Now that you mention it, it would make much more sense to stair scum for a WoR or food instead of going back to town, as it's unlikely you don't have object detection at dlvl ~40...
