When I discovered Angband (3.0.6) on october 2006, and created my first character, I had no idea of what time I was about to spend on my Gorgall... The beginners manual said that I should play a half-troll warrior, to get a little game knowledge... Gorgall gave me a lot of fun, and I played him until the end !
I played with save-cheating (but though, very carefully) until dlvl 60, then pratically without (I saved once, when I killed Sauron, to test how strong was Morgoth, thanks to a suicide-descent).
I agree with everybody that playing without saving is a lot more fun, but cheating helps to go through the first lvls.
The comments on the dump give a good idea of the end of the game.
A new character is on the run...
