YASD - Didn't know they Paralyzed

I was going to do a writeup for my Mage, I was having fun! Then I got blown up by a druid... Damn me for not knowing. Oh well, I won't make that mistake again. Ugh, the gauntlets of free action in the shop should have warned me (although it was BM, 7k gold). Blah at dying at dlvl 11.

    Long post inc.

    ---

    Alaran The High Elf Mage

I've wanted to play a mage for some reason, and get rather far with them. I have no idea why, but I can't play a warrior or ranger or anything else until I finish a mage, or at least get decently far with one. I guess it's because I'd feel like I'm going too easy on myself, mages seem a lot harder to start out with than either, although they might get easier as time goes on. We will see. In any case, here's how I started him out:

    STR: 18 -- 14
    INT: 17 -- 18/50
    WIS: 10 -- 9
    DEX: 14 -- 18
    CON: 10 -- 9
    CHA: 10 -- 16

Sold some food, torches, and my dagger, bought a longbow and 99 arrows. Made a shoot-closest macor (f0*t\e\e\e\e) and inscribed the arrows '@f0'. By the way this usually takes 3-10 new mages to get, for some reason the blacksmith hates stocking longbows... Before all that though I learn detect monsters and check for Farmer Maggot, no dice, oh well. Anyway we are set.

I drop into level 1 and get to killing, 'x' is my fire macro, and I slam it as I burn through the easier monsters. I'm hoping on my trip up to town next I can make enough gold to enchant it decently. We'll see, but as for now, shoot, shoot, shoot. I forgot, had to learn phase door also, don't want to be stuck without some escape. Hit level 2, learn light area. I keep going, then take the downstairs to level 2.

Level 2 gives me an excellent feeling... monster pit of some kind would be superb, so I'm betting its an ego item or a severly out of depth item or monster. I've gotten Pseudo DSM this high twice practically (actually level 4 but I digress), so I'm hoping for something good. I clear the whole level, no tough monsters, but a few drops, armor and some ammo. Going to save those and put them in my house for when I hit 11. Level 2 is old news now, time for 3.

I had hit clevel 5 in level 2 from exploring the whole place, so now I know my entire first spellbook. Cast everything I haven't yet for the EXP, then detect stairs and detect monsters. Nothing special, so I go down to level 4. I hit level 6 down here and killed a poltergeist (I love see invis on High Elves). No room for the potions it dropped, so I drink one in my inventory. Ready? You feel very strong, you feel very smart, you feel very wise, you feel very dexterous, you feel very healthy, you feel very cute. You have no more Yellow potions of Augmentation. I guess I know what was giving me the excellent feeling. Mmm... more mana and spells, I'm a happy camper. Carrying more and shooting better is a plus too, and so is the extra AC and saving throw too... SIgh, I'll have to keep a look out for Yellow potions now huh?

Down to level 5 now. This place seems reasonably safe. Phial on the floor in the next room. SCORE. Man I am lucky, so I'm going ot meet a terrible end, I just know it. Probably after finding Ringil, ha ha. *Knocks on wood.* Kept diving a bit after this, killing what have you. It's been going well, had a few closeish calls, but I'm still alive and kicking! Hit level 11 too, ID time. Id'ed everything in my house, bunch of normal and +1-+2 armors, but money is money. Bought some ?dTresure and ?phase, some !clw, one !csw, and some more arrows and 3 ?recall. Enchanted my bow with the only ?to_dam in the shop, and now I'm ready to recall back to dl 9 (450') and continue. Character dump follows to show progress.

    Continuing...

Recall to dlvl 9, get an excellent feeling. Sweet! I read one of my ?dtreasure and... its seeker bolts. Non magical seeker bolts, but hey they may be useful later with some Tensering up and a crossbow... I continue and a Giant Salamander breathes fire and killes my Conjuring and Tricks... grr. I kill it and the worm mass in the room and continue on, going down and finding nothing particularly useful. I accidentally read a recall scroll when I tried to read a decurse (which I didn't need to anyway.. doh!) and go back to town. I sell some junk and buy more arrows and ?to_dam for my bow which is now (+7,+3), and back down I go.

Druid blows me away. I did not know they paralyzed. Wow.

This is OK for a test character, but you won't survive much past 2500' without much better starting CON. (Or unless you spend a painful amount of time in stat gain.)

EDIT: and I think you are crazy to play mage first, though they are a very well balanced class: on the one hand, they have terrible HP, so you can't face any remotely dangerous monsters. On the other hand, they have terrible offensive skills, so you wouldn't be able to kill them even if you could.

Wow, Sirridan, I didn't know they could do that either! Another reason to be scared of them.

But a little while below 1000' *everything* gets the paralyze spell, so without FA your best bet is to avoid everything like the plague until you do.

Acid bolt is a pretty decent spell once your fail rate is low. Also, their ability to use magic devices better than anyone more than makes up for it, I believe.

... this is making me want to play mages again.
He hit me for HOW MUCH?????
