[V] Adventures of Antoine the kobold rogue

(Not strictly an AAR, since this char is still alive...)

I just started up a kobold rogue since I heard they're fun for diving.
His name is Antoine, but it could be "should be dead already" due to his inordinate luck at avoiding death - he's already had some narrow escapes from low-level orc uniques and Orfax, both times getting away with ?WoR and wands of sleep or confusion to stall the escort.

He's already come across Boots of Speed (+2) - a small boost, but life-saving, as well as a potion of experience, which I almost sold un-ID'd...
I understand that I should hang on to this potion for a while before I drink it? When would be the best time?

The dump is attached, any comments appreciated.

I can think of at least one person who might have a problem with this statement.

      1. You are spending way too much time clearing levels. For a Kobold Rogue, I figure to get below dl 30 by cl 20, and to around dl 60 by cl 30.
      2. keep your best dagger; at some point you will want more blows than you can get with the short sword.
      3. Carry escapes, and use them!!!! (Staff of Teleportation and/or Scrolls of Teleport Level/Deep Descent and/or Scrolls of teleportation. The scrolls are often available in bulk in the black market.)

          Oops.

Any resemblance to actual forum members is coincidental... I've been using french names recently for V chars.

I often use a language/culture for a string of character names - for instance I used Japanese names for TinyAngband, given its origin.

PS Antoine just found an Amulet of ESP at 650' - how lucky is that?

I've followed some of Pete Mack's advice and headed deeper, with immediate pay-off - I picked up Balli Stonehand off a balance drake, after surviving some scary chaos and disenchant breaths. With that, Celegorm, and intrinsic RPois, I've got a lot of my bases covered already. I'm steadily heading down and going after good kills - mobs of Air hounds are my friends, trolls, giants, etc.

Leave some spell books at home. With 17 SP, cl 28, and INT 10 you can't use much beyond book one.

Good call on ditching the spellbooks, in the end my INT bumped up a fair bit so I can cast some of the stuff in them now.

I've hanging around dlvl 45-ish, now looking to drop deeper since coming into a lot of good artifacts... Dor-Lomin, Cambeleg, Orome, Rohirrim, Evenstar, as well as Scarabtrices and Mordenkainen's. A better launcher and some good ammo would be nice, as I'm melee-ing almost everything right now - this char already deals about as much melee damage as my last winner (high-elf ranger).

                  Who's ready for some pain?

Just got the Glaive of Pain from an enchantress, and found a Ring of Acid shortly thereafter... this is going to be fun.

I corroded Ji Indur Dawndeath in 4-5 turns. Ancient D's are one round, maybe two

That's Sauron sorted then - that's basically the best possible melee combo for him ...

                      update

Just finished off Sauron, now on to Morgoth.

I had a good run with glaive of pain + ring of acid/lightning/etc, but I've dropped it now in favor of Deathwreaker, which I picked up from Gothmog's escort shortly before taking on Sauron.

I've never played such a pure melee character this far - his INT has been terrible for the entire game, so I've relied almost exclusively on rods and artifacts to cover the gaps.

It's led to a different play-style, since rather than shoot and scoot tactics, I've taken to running straight up to sleeping uniques, casting door creation around them, and then just pounding them. This has changed since I aggravate now...

I don't anticipate any problems with Morgoth - I have all resistances covered, +30 speed, and tons of healing stockpiled. Should be pretty easy.
This is also my lowest turncount ever for this depth... gotta keep on trying to pick up the pace

                      The dump...

                        Winner!

Morgoth fell pretty quick, as planned.

There was a sticky moment when he summoned so many special opponents that I hadn't bothered to take out before, that his minions were doing more damage than the big P, and I was low on healing potions. But, I teleported away, and as usual the big boss outpaced his guys and ran up to me alone, so I could finish him off.

I grabbed the crown and hammer and skedaddled.

                        My fastest win!

I never actually try to kill all the uniques before fighting Morgoth, but it usually works out that almost all are dead. Did you make good use of TO and *Destruction* devices?

                            Glad it worked out! Grats!

                              Thanks!

i use TO liberally and i should probably use it even more. There are some uniques that are almost always "auto-TO" like the Angels and Tarrasque, though I did go back and get them near the end.

I don't use *destruct* much cause I think it's cheesy but I can't deny it's utility. I used it once to bump the Tarrasque out of a vault when I didn't have TO. If I dived more aggressively, I think I'd *destruct* more often. Something to try for the future, I guess.
