Killed by a Death Sword on dungeon level 4.

Jaeru had already acquired a 'sword of light' and was making short work of the poor snaga and orcs that had the misfortune to be in her path. Then I go to 'pick up' a sword and "the death sword cuts you" "low hitpoint warning" x 5 or so.

    DEAD.

That was the first time I ever met a death sword in this variant (or remember meeting in any variant).

      Haha. It's a secret.

Seriously it's TinyAngband but it hasn't been officially released in English yet. It should work just fine if you compile it from the svn repository without the Japanese compile options, though. (I fudged it to use the New Angband Sound Collection)

ToME and Entro have Deathswords, too.
Just another kind of mimic. A nasty one, at that.
Don't know if they are in V...
If you can convincingly pretend you're crazy, you probably are.

They're a Z creation I think, so pretty much all Z derivatives (which includes ToME and Entro) will have them, but others won't.

AAARGH! Killed again in exactly the same way.

How many characters is it going to take before I catch on.

AFAIK there are no death swords in Vannilla.
Vanilla has scroll mimics, ring mimics, potion mimics, and chest mimics. All of them can cast spells and summon monsters which can be quite nasty.

I've taken to using 'monster detect' a lot. Not bad practise, but must be tough on classes that can't do that easily. (I'm playing a warrior-mage so I'm pretty good melee and spells )

I am pretty sure that my first encounters with mimics - in times long since forgotten - were surprising and deadly. ^^

Eomer, character level 12, just survived an encounter with a death sword.

Death swords used to be even nastier in Z. They did not disturb you if you were running down a dark corridor, so you never got a chance to examine the monster before ending up right next to it. Instant death for low-level characters.

At the heartfelt pleas from (some) users. OK, me and one other. The death swords in TinyAngband have been somewhat nerfed.

Change the visuals so that Death Swords appear as something other than "|". It's just not worth the frustration of dying to them repeatedly... and it always seems that the ONE time you forget to examine the sword it turns out to be a Death Sword.

Isn't it basically the same as a Ring Mimic? I have naturally started doubting every white '=' symbol I see. If the death swords are always the same color, it might just be a learning experience.

Mimics are native to deeper levels in vanilla. It is very unlikely to see one on dlvl 4.
