After my first win ever with a rogue, i was in a mind to try an NPP mage like Pete Mack suggested to me, but out of curiosity i created a dunadan paladin in V, to check out the priest spell selection.
I also decided to try randarts, which proved to be quite interesting - i don't know if i was particularly lucky, but i found quite a few at depths i normally almost never found any, even though they were not that powerful; if this is an unintended side effect of randarts, it's a good one - finding more early low power artifacts makes the game more interesting.
Anyway, a few preliminary observations:
- lack of stealth is a real pain, being used to rogues i almost got killed more times than i can tell (and in the end actually that got me killed)
- lack of decent detection (until the dungeon spellbook - see later) is also a pain, especially since you can't detect hounds except the invisible ones
- resist cold&fire and magic mapping are ace!
- early access to portal is also great, it essentially has the same purpose of teleport
So, back to the report: i was at dlvl59, clvl28, sorely underpowered, until a few turns before lacking as usual -TelOther, and getting really pissed off by my inability to detect non-evil non-invisible monsters (just a bit before i turned a corner and found myself face to face with a drolem.....) - when i detect lying on the floor spellbook 6; you guessed it, it's the one with detect monsters in it - at last! I also found out that Uriel was close by, still sleeping. I was also slowed down by some good finds in my pack/equipment - the situation was very risky.
I decided to go for it, and was able to greb the spellbook, also detect for some treasure etc and identify some more loot, and finally activate the rod of recall, and start moving out of line of sight from uriel. My low speed got me - uriel woke up, cast a fire ball + breathed fire on me - and i'm toast.
Lesson learned: use more _Speed when i find them, never get slowed by inventory, and resist to greed
