A while ago I started to try to break some personal records in terms of turn count, and met with little success. I kept cannonballing into the depths and eventually making a minor (or not so minor) mistake that got me killed. I learned some things, but got a bit frustrated . I put less than 6 hours into the best of those chars, so it was fun for a while, but... I need to build some confidence before I make another run at those personal bests.
Lately I've been trying to slow down, play a more solid game, and put together a string of wins without obsessing over turncount. My first attempt was going well until I lost my head a bit and dropped to speed ring depth with a young V mage (clvl ~35)- think I mentioned that char in another thread. To make a long story short, I made a not so minor mistake (teleporting out of danger with low hp into a room I had previously scanned as safe only to discover, upon lighting it up, that I had mistaken a druj for a skeleton... ack... I was pretty disgusted with myself after that- it's enough to make you want to play some Diablo.
Instead I decided to play some always small level NPP 0.4.1. I've played less NPP than V so it still holds some surprises for me. I started an HE warrior and proceeded cautiously, spending a fair bit of time in the early 1500s looking for !stat- I didn't max anything there, but I got Con fairly high. I had a really nice piece of luck, maybe around 2000' or so, I forget, when I found an Ancient Dragon Scale Shield (Chromatic). For a warrior, this is the ideal shield- now that my stats are high, I wouldn't trade it for Thorin, unless I found Colluin as well. It is basically Colluin in shield form, but with about twice the recharge time, so I'd say that not only is it artifact quality, it is top-tier artifact quality, for a warrior. I'd rather have Colluin and Thorin, but I am not complaining about that shield .
OTOH, this fellow was not lucky, early, in other respects. Got Thranduil at 2600', which was nice, but couldn't find speed or a decent weapon for quite a while. Wound up wearing Gauntlets of Power, rings of Slaying and Damage adding up to +27 damage, and using a rapier of extra attacks (+2) for a long time. Spent a lot of time at Wyrm depth, till Fingolfin, Thror, and the Arkenstone showed up. Got tired of waiting for speed and went down to ring depth... Narya dropped on the way, and then, around 850,000 turns, at 3850', I broke +10 perm speed- dropped my melee damage a lot, but still a relief to be able to haste to +20. Shortly thereafter Gondor and Vilya dropped... I _never_ find Vilya, so I was psyched.
By clvl 43 I had close to a winning kit, but still no really good weapon, and not enough consumables- in V (or if I were close to a personal record) I might have just gone for it, but in NPP Morgy is tougher. The mace is very good against undead, and things that don't resist cold, but the +to_dam is low against others. Just found Hurin, nice against dragons and Sauron (demons don't tend to resist cold, so the mace is usually better against them). Got forced off 4900' to Sauron depth, but had to run back to town as I was in no shape to take him on on the tiny level.
I'm torn at the moment. I kind of want to recall and kill Sauron to see what he drops. I can take him with Hurin, I think, but I might have to use too many resources doing it right now. OTOH, most of the worst uniques are still alive (the one really bad moment I've had with this character was against Vecna, and I had to ?tele_level with 45 HP after failing to use a wand of tele_other- by rights I should have died; I always forget how tough he is in NPP). I'm getting a bit bored with this character, so I'm tempted to just try to finish things now but... I have no reliable means of escape, no melee weapon that can hurt Morgy as fast as I would like, a limited amount of Slay Evil ammo, and probably not enough *Healing* and Life to compensate for the slow melee damage... I've won with less, but I would hate to have to retreat. I'd also hate to see Vecna get summoned... I have yet to see a single scroll of Mass Banishment- are they even in NPP ?
Even though I am making an effort to play solidly and win reliably, I'd rather not go over a million turns. I'm at 916,000 now. At +24 or so speed, that's a fair bit of time to go after uniques, and see what they drop. So right now I am thinking go kill Sauron, then mop up the Tarrasque, Vecna, Cantoras, and a few other baddies, along with anyone else who gets in the way, grabbing Life and *Healing* where I can.
