I got into a level (Zangband) and got the message "This level is guarded by 9 Ethereal Dragons." OK. Cool.

So I start fighting one, it kicks the SHIT out of me. I'm down to 80 hp, I teleport away. I'm in a room full of orcs, but my stealth is so high that I just sleep and start gaining health without them waking up. Then....It Breathes Darkness....You are dead.

Wtf? A DARKNESS attack for ~100 HP? What does darkness even do?

Probably an Ethereal dragon you couldn't see. Darkness causes blindness and darkens the area around you in addition to its damage.

Yeah, it was an Etheral Dragon. I just was used to Shadow Hounds breathing darkness for like, no damage, so I assumed the attack was mainly just a blinding thing until you had resistance.

The jump from hound damage to dragon damage is severe. Just as is the jump from dragon damage to ancient dragon damage.
