just when things took a turn for the better...

Staff of teleportation got burned up by a plasma or fire vortex. Finally seemed to get my big break; an 8-8 vault and while I had pretty pathetic gear I did have two wands of TO. So I find a nice amulet and resistance armor (I still don't have FrAct). I've enlightened the level and also just picked up a staff of teleportation, as soon as I pick it up the elven sorcerer comes out and blasts me with a fire storm and there goes my second staff of teleportation. A little later, still in the vault, I try to kill a mage, but he sends me to the far corner of the level where I teleported everyone to (although luckily the Ancient Green Dragon wasn't there, just the elven sorceror, couple mature dragons a death knight a dunadan of angmar, a huorn and a xorn to crush all my arrows (he didn't, tho). So I kill them all using !speed and 'Terror and some elemental wands (I even nuked the huorn with the wands of firebolts) but I teleported the sorcerer away again, which was the right move. My main source of damage at this point is a ring of fire, maul of venom (now up to 69 dam to those not resistant to venom) and an accuracy long bow (+22, +9) and animal shots I throw at things cause I found no sling (+8, +9).

Oh! I forgot to mention I did get telepathy helm in the vault as well, so I had telepathy after the mage sent me on my trip to the far corner of the level. Anyway, I start making my way back to the vault and gravity hounds with fire hounds block my way. I do all sorts of stone to mud trickery to try to kill them but it's very tedious. I kill about half of them, but then they all of a sudden stop being shy and charge me and kill me.

Yes, and if you do an egoless challenge, unless you're extremely lucky with RoS drops, it's the only way to get the required +30 speed to fight Morgoth.
