    Dogs and cats

Me: Gnome mage, cLvl 43, dLvl 63.

I just found spellbook #5, and I'm taking advantage of Banishment and Mass Banishment to clear non-uniques, loot, and exterminate uniques.

I'm a firm believer in the theory "Morgoth can't summon it if I've already killed it, so killing all of the uniques is obviously the sensible path forward when getting ready to take out Morgoth."

I find Fundin Bluecloak sleeping, and I decide to circle around the dungeon to approach him from the opposite direction, clearing out the level along the way. I figure that if things don't go well during a battle with him, I can teleport away and be less worried about appearing in the middle of a group of angry monsters.

Halfway around the dungeon, however, I find that the skull vault that looked fairly innocent from a distance contains Tevildo, Prince of Cats; Saruman of Many Colours; and Carcharoth, the Jaws of Thirst.

Carcharoth? Oh, this changes the equation.

I circle back and kill Fundin Bluecloak without too much trouble. I have more pressing concerns, now, and the whole fight is practically an afterthought.

The next step: wiping out the rest of the non-uniques in the dungeon with Mass Banishment spells, which proceeds uneventfully.

I position myself outside the skull vault. The outer chamber contains Tevildo, and he's awake and ready for a fight.

I prep for the battle: Speed, Resistance, Mana Channel.

I drill through the wall into the outer chamber with a wand of Stone to Mud, and Tevildo immediately leaps to attack. I hit him with a Slow Monster wand before he has line-of-sight on me, then Phase Door to get out of the vault and several squares away from him. Slowed, with me hasted and buffed, Tevildo doesn't last too long.

I rest, regain my spell points, and prep for the next battle.

I return to the skull vault. Carcharoth and Saruman are both in the same inner chamber. Saruman's awake and ready to fight, but Carcharoth is sleeping in the back corner of the chamber.

I drill through the stone with the wand of Stone to Mud to open access to (and from) the inner chambers. Just like Tevildo, Saruman immediately leaps to the attack. I Teleport Other, and Saruman is gone.

Now, it's just you and me, Carcharoth.

Remember me, Carcharoth? Or, rather, my previous iteration of this character? That version of me encountered you at dLvl 90 (or thereabouts). You might remember me because I found you sleeping in a vault then, too.

That time you had one of the Ringwraiths with you. I lured the Ringwraith out of that room, and killed it. Then I retreated to a distance which I was sure was far enough from you to avoid waking you, and I rested ("&") to regain hit points and spell points.

Then I woke from my rest to find you were at the mouth of the corridor on the far side of the room, and I was at negative hit points due to fire damage.

Carcharoth, if you searched my (decidedly blacked) corpse, you would've found one specific item that I was going to equip before battling you. That item would have stood out, because it would've given me fire immunity.

All of these things run through my mind as the "pop" of Saruman's disappearance echos through the skull vault. For a moment I considered chasing down Saruman and coming back for you, but he can wait.

I have another fire immunity item, and this time it's equipped.

The "pop" from Saruman's teleport didn't wake you, Carcharoth, so I had to cast "Light" to wake you and lure you into line-of-sight. Wand of Slow Monster, Phase Door, and then peppering you with Mana Bolts and sucking down Healing potions until you were dead and I wasn't.

Being part of the "I gotta kill ALL the uniques because I don't want Morgoth summoning you" club, I'd normally say to the unique I'm killing "Sorry...nothing personal; it's just the way things are, eh?"

But in this case, it was personal.

Special bonus: The kill pushes me up to cLvl 44.

    Well done!
I find Huan significantly more dangerous than Carcharoth, as I am far likelier to have imFire+rNether than imCold+rSound+rShards.

Nice - though his shard breath also is unpleasant. Me, I normally dont bother with him.

Just lost ridiculously powerful CL50 HE blackguard due to forgetting 2 details:
        1. don't have rSound
        2. Huan breathes sound

Just moments earlier he had gone through Tarrasque like it was made of butter...

Reduced to -3 HP by Morgoth with a bolt of raw magic.

Had a heck of a good time at 3500, though. I think I must've interrupted a Board Meeting of uniques. Found 11 uniques in a "Castle Death" Greater Vault, and 2 more outside of it. Three more uniques were summoned before everything was finished.

When you're at 18/100 and CL 50, there is no reason to go in with under 700HP--and 800+ is better. 560HP makes sense only if you are doing an extreme power dive, and still have low base con.

See you only had CON 18/130 and 556hp. Morgoth can cast Mana storms for 600 damage, so always make sure you have more than that - ideally at least 700.
