died like 5 times now on early 5-8 type levels.

I bought heat and cold resistant potions from the store. Something I never do. Then I'm fighting two dwarven lords and I'm thinking, gee, maybe I should quaff the potions; but I had them in mind for like a red H or a dragon or something. Frickin' died to fire bolt or some shit. Dying in Angband has been more painful lately because this is like the 5th high treasure feeling level in a row I died on or fell through a trap door or was some other way denied finding out what the 8 item was.

So, yeah, uhh... happy new year.

But then won without taking any damage in the final fight, so happy new year after all:

Yeah, not sure what he was thinking. I guess he really wanted to bash my brains in but never got the chance.

I finally got off my lazy arse and finished editing The Great Ice Wyrm part III.

          Completely unexpected and shocking death.

Suffered what very well may have been the most shocking death I think I have endured playing this game in my fairly long and storied career as an adventurer. I'll tell you about it at another time as the pain of it is still too near.

You thought you swapped for lightning immunity, but ended up without resistance at all. Died at -1000HP.

Good guess Pete Mack. I've done that before. I've also died from swapping around equipment and losing Free action very late in the game. This was just... a real surprise. Not sure if it reflects a change to 4.2.x or if the pesky monster that surprised me with his damages was always a risk to my @'s health. I thought he was just an annoyance monster?

Then it was an energy vortex. Their spark potentially does relatively big damage unresisted. That was my second guess.
I did that botched swap too, vs Ariel, Angel of the Sun. Died with 1200 fire damage.

Ive had a couple late game free action deaths; the only no resist death I recall was recently when I intentionally left out fire resistance against Sauron and, well, it wasnt the Sauron I expected anymore.
