My first character that managed to overcome Bombadil!
I was lucky enough to find an armour of resist confusion in Goldberry's pool and was therefore quite safe. I mostly used my arrows of disease, poison and ice, and phased around to avoid his melee attacks. The arrows of ice seemed especially effective. Finished him off with a fire bolt.
Unfortunately I had left a lot of good object in Bombadil's home thinking I would return there on the way back. Oh well, you can't have it all...

Um. Bombadil is not the toughest monster you have to fight in the direction your going. Good luck.

I see you're looking forward to a quiver implementation as well then...

Wow! Our maintainer is back! I almost filed a bug with a petition to set you free, whomever it is that keeps you in an enchanted tower, you know. ;>>>

I've just read on the dump:

Quiver will not be enabled until version 0.7.0

Is that true?

Redelmansidi, congratulations on your victory! You have a nice style, BTW. :) Share with me --- does Paralysis work on Bombadil? Wow, how did you manage to accumulate so many Speed potions? From Bombadil house? They are not available in Buckland shops, are they (CVS)?

Did you think the stairs down from the Bombadil dungeon lead to the surface of the dungeon? I make the same mistake once in a while; I guess because TOME does this --- finishing a dungeon leads to its entrance. I think a message that says "this is the bottom of the duneon, by entering the staircase you will go to a different wilderness y/n" would be nice. Then you would remember to go upstairs instead...

So, your fiance(e?) kept you in an enchanted tower in Amsterdam. Then who rescued you?

As to the quiver/quest, that was an old trick; I tried to make you address a false gossip in hopes of learning some trade secrets. ;) No luck here --- quiver will be added, when its done. :)

On 7.6.2006 02:07 redelmansidi wrote:
Paralysis did not work on him although I did try it.
I think I bought most of the speed potions in buckland. I guess they do stock them sometimes.

Wow, looking at my dump it seems like I've been in a lot of places. I guess Pseudomonas has been doing some exploring on his own.

BTW, I've tried using sense magic (spell and scroll) but they don't seem to do anything. Neither does the spell detect power. Any ideas about that?

On 7.6.2006 02:32 Bandobras wrote:
Pity about the paralysation. Do you use the latest CVS or regular 0.6.1? Perhaps your standard mage pseudo-id already told you all that Sense Magic does? I had no use for Sense Magic as a Paladin, except for potions (a cute touch, that). For my shaman Sense Magic works strangly, by changing {unruned} into <2 Wheels> {magical} on a cursed staff of Haste Monsters...

What happens when you use sense magic on potions? When I do it nothing happens.

That's quite funny. I just cast a magic missile on a guard dog and as he escaped he chewed on his own teeth.

Currently exploring the Barrow Downs. I'm very tempted to try the black rider in bree, who is relatively easy as long as you have a good ranged melee weapon and plenty of phase door, but will probably kill the emperor wight first.

> I use the latest version.

You mean 0.6.1-beta2? Then some things are probably different than in the latest CVS I play. In particular, the Sense Magic effect on potions is a recent addition...

With some way of seeing him from a distance the Rider at Bree is wimpy indeed. The emperor wight I have yet to kill, though...

On 7.6.2006 23:29 redelmansidi wrote:
Where do you get the latest CVS?

On 8.6.2006 05:06 redelmansidi wrote:
So far so good. Have finished the Barrow Downs and killed the emperor wight. He managed to hit me a couple of times but overall he wasn't too hard.
My book of chants was destroyed by fire shortly after and I did not want to fight the black rider in Bree until I get another one, especially because of the teleport spell. Unfortunately the shop seemed to have also had a fire and it took them quite a while to stock new ones. I meanwhile continued exploring level 13 of the Barrow Downs.
Once the book was bought I took on the rider in Bree. Mostly used bolts to take him down. The bolts of slay undead were really useful. He didn't drop anything interesting but I gained 2 levels killing him.
The rider in Weathertop isn't going to be nearly as easy. I will first have to find some means of resist nether. Last time I tried him he killed me with a single nether bolt. I will also need more HP. I think there should be another dungeon between Bree and Weathertop, or maybe there should be more levels in the Weathertop dungeon to help prepare and get good eq before fighting the rider.

On 8.6.2006 10:29 andrewdoull@hotmail.com wrote:
I can increase weathertop a little, but it will make the following dungeons less challenging. The rider in Weathertop is intentionally hard... I could add some temporary resist nether items if that doesn't feel too unbalancing.

Good to see you have found some magic bags. I was worried these were too rare. Any reason you're not carrying them?

On 8.6.2006 13:54 redelmansidi wrote:
I was trying to get some weight off before taking on the rider in Bree.

On 8.6.2006 23:30 Bandobras wrote:
So perhaps make it somewhat along the LoTR plot. E.g. if the rider defeats you, you loose lots of stats, some levels, you get black breath, a disease, etc. but you ultimately survive? Perhaps make the damage to your stats proportional to the Rider's HP left when he kills you? Perhaps make the black breath repear from thime to time throughout the game until some other victory, e.g. granting you access to Lothlorien, where Galadriel eases you pain, or something?

This is somewhat related to my idea that you do not kill good uniques, but wound them, or knock them unconsious, etc. In the same way, not all lost fights of the character have to be lethal...

On 8.6.2006 23:33 Bandobras wrote:
> Where do you get the latest CVS?

The latest CVS has to be compiled and you get it using a CVS client from the UnAngband BerliOS development page. If you use Linux I can assist you in the compilation, etc.

Finally managed to kill the rider in weathertop, more through luck than anything else. He did not try to cast a nether bolt at me and I resist the rest of his attacks. Used the fire bolt II spell to kill him. Will now continue to try the next rider...

Yes!!! Have also killed the third black rider. Again was very lucky. Just blasted him with fire bolt II before he had a chance to do much.
