Or maybe I've just been playing too much Sil and I forget what slays actually exist in vanilla
damage = (dice roll) * (weapon heft * your prowess)
blows = 1 + (weapon balance * your finesse)
Terrain in general is one of those things that I think most people consider to be variant territory. Vanilla has a very "clean" (alternately, bare-bones) dungeon aesthetic which some people like. Of course, many if not most variants add terrain of some kind, so it's clearly a popular addition.
