I've been playing Z+ recently. Love the world and the quests, find it easier to get to lev 20.
Tome 2.3.x is the one I have played the most, like that summoners and possessors give some very different gameplay.

Another old but interesting variant is EyAngband.
I also enjoy FA and NPP and neoband.
Poscheng is endlessly fascinating, but also frustrating.

I like Sangband because I prefer the skill system to the fixed character classes that most of the other variants have. But since I discovered Dungeon Crawl I haven't really been playing it.

my gaming with variants up to 2004 or so, the favorite were:
Cthangband, Sangband, tome1.x.x, zangband and hengband.

From the new ones, since I got back in the last 3 years I only played Sil, but it is very different from vanilla and is very nice. Need to try the others like Poschengband. Also Tome is still a great game.

Unfortunately, I have no idea. Never played with tiles and they've been moribund for years and years. (Instead of just letting them languish and confuse new players, I've removed the option completely from my development branch. I'll reevaluate if/when I get a fully working Qt5 port.)

Hopefully, there'll be some actual improvements to T2.x during 2015. (Well, you might disagree that they're improvements, but they'll be pretty mild, I think.)

finalfantasy VIIband because i finally found the pc code for ffVII and started playing that as well.

The playability of V is something of a stumbling block for my enjoyment of many variants. For all that V is so Vanilla it's still simply a joy to play compared to variants based on older versions.

I play Sil and it's different enough from Angband that the play experience doesn't directly translate. Closer to home, I also play PosBand entirely for the Quylthulgs.

I really loved Z's specialized shops and vast random wilderness, but after playing vanilla 3.5.0 and getting used to all the quality-of-life improvements, dang. I just can't go back, even though my least favorite thing about V is how quickly the town becomes useless. Are there any variants based on 3.5.0 that have an expanded shopping system?

Another reason why PosChengband remains my all-time-favorite:
Weapons that activate to Summon Cyberdemon!!

    *SPOILER warning*

Now that we're almost in 2015, I'd have that say that PosChengband is, by far, my most favorite variant of all tiime.
