I've been using persistent levels exclusively, so I'm not sure if this behavior is present otherwise. If I leave a level that has an artifact on it, the knowledge of that artifact's existence is populated. It doesn't seem to rely on the item being seen... at least not in line of sight, as far as I can tell... haven't done much testing on it to see if detection matters.
The knowledge entry is pretty sparse, but it does at least give the player a chance to go back and snag arts that they might have otherwise missed. Is this some kind of compromise between persistent levels and preserve mode, or an unintended side effect?
