They used to be easier, since it was easy to enchant the starting bow to (+7,+7). But it really isn't hard to get to Cl 20 as any half-casting class. At that point all it takes is a longbow of Power or the like.

That's standard operating procedure for basically all of my fights, but usually I have to carefully ration my use of Destruction because I only have it in scroll (and maybe staff) form. Being able to cast it freely is huge.

Why should a ranger use Kelek's?

    Bedlam is always useless.

Destruction at 5% fail (or more) is useless as a one-turn escape.

For fighting, rangers need long distance line of sight. They want open areas (or long straight corridors against summoners) so they can shoot from range.

Oh, yes, you are right. I forgot about that, since my rangers never bother to carry Kelek's and instead use the scroll.

For Umbar, maybe. +2 CON in the bow slot can be helpful, tho the damage isn't as good as a good ego bow. For Razorback, I have no idea

I've found Razorback and Crossbow of Umbar but both aggravate monsters, should I save them for the Sauron/Morgoth battle?

Different strokes. Mages are weak for a looooooong time, and sometimes these are the only way to take out strong opponents. For a reasonably high level mage with enough mana, setting up a hockey-stick or a pseudo-destructed area is no problem, and even fun to experiment with fighting & phasing around in.
