    "preserve mode"

    Just to clarify: "birth_no_preserve"'s default setting, "no", is what most manuals refer to as "preserve mode on," since its description is "don't preserve artifacts when leaving level."

    Right? I have rtfm'd on this, but the documentation isn't totally clear what a "yes" versus a "no" toggle on this option means.

    Yeah, the double negatives are confusing, but "no" to "no_preserve" means preserve mode on.
