    zen and angband

I played moria when I was in high school, loved it but never really got into it. Now I'm into vanilla angband and after some abortive attempts I really started following the advice of the guides and reading the spoilers and all that good stuff, and I'm at CL28 and about 1000' - getting there was all about zen-like calm and patience.

    My character sheet is attached.

I'm way worried about moving paralyzers - I had a dustup a few runs back at 950' with an evil eye, and I didn't relish getting wailed on by some hounds until I got a lucky roll, woke up and _TS.

So how do I get a free action item? Where do I look for it? Am I right to be that paranoid about getting FA before going past 1000'.

EDIT: The dump for this character is up on the ladder: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=8324

Also, should I have more artifacts? Am I getting them generated at this shallow of a place in the dungeon? Any time I get a positive feeling it just seems like there's a jelly pit or something. Am I not looking hard enough for artifacts? Are they (gasp) going to the great artifact dungeon in the sky? Or do artifacts usually come at greater depths?

I guess what I'm asking is, what depth should I start being really paranoid about leaving without finding an artifact if I got a good feeling entering the level?

Re: paralysers - FA can come in many forms, in rings, armor and weapons. Check all armor and weapons that pseudo as {excellent} to see if they make you immune to paralysis. You'll also occasionally find these for sale in the black market and in the weapon/armor/temple stores, so make sure to check every time you're in town.

1000' is indeed where the paralysers start coming out in full force.

You don't technically need FA to survive them. Learn which monsters can cast paralysis at you, cast detect evil with staffs, which you can get at the magic supply store, and avoid them at all cost. A couple of the main early ones are Druids, Homonculi and Illusionists. Also, it's a good rule of thumb to never come within melee range of eyes, jellies or molds.

    Re: artifacts
Don't sweat it; you won't find many until deeper in the dungeon. Make sure you have preserve mode on, and the ones you miss will come around again eventually.

EDIT: You should also know you can post your dumps directly to the site's "Ladder" section (tab at the top); you'll get more feedback that way.

I believe one of the spoiler files has a nice section on important depths and what resistances you should have before going past them. I think it's tang.txt

Can I link it to my forum posts?

EDIT: I mean is there a usual way people display it, not just linking it with tags?

This is the only way I've seen it done. Some people put a link in their signature.

The tang.txt does have a list of checkpoints (about a third of the way into the file), but a lot of people (myself included) seem to be of the opinion that if you follow those guidelines strictly, you're probably going to die because you're going too slowly. I mean, everyone has their own style, but if you detect often, you can descend quicker than that guide recommends.
