Thanks for all the help guys. I first played Angband back in '94 and I never managed to win. I started up again last year and won once (but via reloading against Morgoth) and this is my first real win.
And Disenchantment does do damage; IIRC the damage cap for it is 400.
500. Big four = shards, disenchantment, chaos and sound do 500 (law+chaos = balance dragon combo), Nether does 550. Rest I think are either 400 if you can get resist or 200 if you can't.
Chaos prevents hallucination, and I think mind blast can cause that if you don't have perfect saving throw.
And Disenchantment does do damage; IIRC the damage cap for it is 400. But you're not likely to face it much; it's a pretty rare element. If you don't care about the side-effect (and mages generally don't), then it's not really worth worrying about.
I'm doing much, much better than I thought I would. Now I have to try and figure out how to kill Morgoth. I'm thinking much like I did with Sauron, but bring all my potions.
Actually, IIRC neither Sauron nor Morgoth throws disenchantment or chaos around, and anyway as a mage you don't give a hoot about disenchantment (beyond it potentially affecting your bow, but that's a long shot) because you aren't going to be doing much melee anyway.
Of course their summons are different stories, but again, you're a mage; if Banishment and Teleport Other won't do there's always Word of Destruction.
Disenchantment doesn't do damage? That's nice to know.

Ah wouldn't you know... a Kelek's finally shows up in an undead pit on level 85 and I just used my last mass banish scroll the previous level... *sigh*
Depends of the sling. Buckland slings can be rather mighty weapons. If you get both +2 shots and might you have x4 weapon with three shots with mage. With good ammo that beats pretty much any mage spell (if you can hit the target) and you save your mana for utility and emergency reset-battleground -spell (destruction).
Yeah, it's a +2 in both shots and might (and +5 dex).
