I think I've never seen such a huge number of monsters at one level in any other variant. With 3 shots per round and quite a nice bow I can decimate them pretty efficienly, but I keep running out of arrows all the time and I've already been forced to stair scum for these. Other annoyance is lack of trap detection abilities, since I am more used to playing mages, but so far traps haven't been that deadly.
Anyway, so far this seems as interesting variant so I am really curious how this char is going to turn out.
On 10.4.2003 01:51 jup@email.cz wrote: Just defeated Beorn and the path to Mirkwood is open. Once I realized that by carrying arrows on the belt, I need only half the time to fire them (!), effectivelly doubling number of shots per round, uniques are not that bad. Much easier than large groups of monster which cost me lot of arrows.
I also tried buying a map (Angmar I guess). It said I should start by going to Rivendell. Which I did but it still said I shoul travel to Rivendell. Checking dungeon.txt it seems there are two places named Rivendell, so I guess I am on the wrong side, but it's a bit confusing.
Anyway, I guess I head to Barrow-downs and try to fight my way back to Hobbiton for a change.
On 10.4.2003 11:18 andrewdoull@hotmail.com wrote: The whole map thing is a hack on a hack... so don't expect it to behave that well ;)
Other than that I'm surprised you're not a little better equipped at this stage. I usually have at least 1 or 2 ego items and occasionally a rand art by the time I off Beorn.
On 10.4.2003 13:38 jup@email.cz wrote: Since the lack of idnentify, I usually rely heavily on my pseudo-id ability, and sometimes destroy weapons that don't pseudo-id for some time. So it's possible that I destroyed some ego-weapons, thought more likely this character just didn't have luck so far.
I would even appreciate some basic items, such as Rof of Trap Location. And after close encounter with paralazyses attack of Ghoulish Soul, I think free action might also be pretty good idea.
On 11.4.2003 23:38 jup@email.cz wrote: Home sweet home! Got back to Hobbiton and with few interesting items from Barow-downs. I am especially proud of that nice Red Dragon Scale Mail, and Sabre of *Slay Unded* with ESP for undead and SI is also nice. After arriving in Hobitton, I also took care of Farmer Maggot's place and Old Forrest, with Tom Bombadil dropping Phial. I also somehow ended in Bree with Black Rider and after runing around half the town and interesting fight killed him too.
Now, I would really appreciate some source of Free Action. I am quite reluctant to go below dl20 without one. I guess I try to wait for it in Mirkwood.
On 13.4.2003 23:43 jup@email.cz wrote: This character somehow got a bit more challengenging then I expected. Reached Lake-town without any major problems and departed for Lonely Mountain. Then things got funny.
Almost immidiatelly I encountered Smaug and cowardly run away back to Lake-town only to find out that it's considerably worse than Lonely mountain. After a rather meaningless running around in a vain attempt to find a guardian, which cost me consideralble amount of arrows I headed back to Lonely mountain and had an interesting talk with Smaug atop, with grass burning around and all those funny stuff.
Victorious, I came back to Lake-town to find out that those people probably can't tell difference between bow and sling, since only interesting objects they offered me for saving their town were two slings (one of them atrifact) and bunch of scrolls and runes. Since I currently get 4 shots with bow and one with sling, I kindly refused and sold their offerings in neares shop.
Even greater surprise was when I returned to Lonely Mountain and recalled down, arriving in front of some ugly looking big D which didn't seem to be ecactly what I would expect seeing there. Checking score screen revealed that my current recall deppth jumped from 26 at the bottom of Mirkwood to 39, supposedly thanks to the trip to Lake-town. For the sheer fun I killed few more Ds around there, but then my wisdom prevailed my suicidal tendencies, and I ended up in Dale.
I paid a visit to Battle of Five Armies only to be again unable to find appropriate guardian to kill and finally departed via Lonely mountain to Rivendell, since I was considerably running out of food and Dale doesn't have food shop (I really wonder what those people there do), ad doesn't seem to restock at all.
Even Rivendell doesn't look the same it did, it's improved with Bilbo's house, and maps suddenly work. So now, with 3 possible maps I can follow from Rivendell and two places I can go to without map, I am shivering in Rivendell at the prospect of landing again at dl39 with 300HP and wondering which way assures quicker death. As things currently stand, I wouldn't bet a penny on this character.
The fact that there's a map to get from Rivendell to Isengard, althought Isengard can also be reached without a map only adds to my overall confusion.
On 14.4.2003 12:21 andrewdoull@hotmail.com wrote: Like I said, its a bit of a hack :(
You'll find that all the accessible dungeons are a bit easier at this stage, however, you'll need to climb down from the top instead of rely on word of recall (All of these dungeons start at level 20)...
The ruins of Lake-town depth is definitely a problem (And I'll adjust that with the next release...). Thanks for pointing it out.
On 16.4.2003 02:22 jup@email.cz wrote: Oh well, climbing all the way from top didn't really interest me, so I could say I have what I wanted. I recalled to Caradhras dungeon and was perfectly safe at the bottom (which is just dl32) until I run into Caradhras himself. He really needed just one round of fight to kill me, the fact that I got a chance at failed attempt to activate wand with 9HP remaining was just RNG's way of toying with me.
OTOH, I don't really know how I could have prevented this, since he's quick and bumping into him around the corner is hardly completely avoidable without some ability of detect monsters.
As a side note, since the runes of Lake-town problem, wouldn't it be possible to introduce some form or the other of reset recall depth? Even current vanilla can reset recall depth when one recalls from shalower depth then is his default, and since the way dungeons in Un work, it may be sometimes unavoidable to get recall depth much deeper then one would like.
On 16.4.2003 02:47 jup@email.cz wrote: Oh, and then there's the fact, that Caradhras is 44 levels OOD at the bottom. This makes me feel not so bad about this character's fate.Next time at least I know what to expect.

Oh, and thanks for the fix, I will test it in next game.
On 9.5.2003 17:26 cnrobertson@yahoo.com wrote: My ranger (Rachel - #3 on the list right now) ran into Caradhras while exploring the dungeon there and almost managed to kill him. However, she ran out of speed potions and arrows while he still had 1-2 stars of health left. (She had about 300 arrows to begin with, too!) I was under no illusions about what would happen if I ever let him get close enough to melee her, so I fled and moved on to Moria, just like the Fellowship did.
I believe you can move on to Moria from Caradhras without even entering the dungeon, so you never have to meet him. Not that Moria's a picnic, of course.
I should get another character going sometime...
On 11.5.2003 19:22 jup@email.cz wrote: Yeh, Moria is reachanle from Caradhras. That's probably what I would do the next time, just bypass Caradhras and try my luck there. The problem is that I ran into Caradhras around corner and didn't really get chance to react in any way. Should have been probably more carefull.
