Well settled on Samurai after my dear departed monk. And luck has been reverse. enter yeek cave and rd level smeagol shows and drops this awesome shield (randart or newly added donno). Keep diving and get nice resistance chest and damage is pretty badass already with holy A weap. So i kill king and leave for next city and stop by at orc cave to get Recall. But i decide to dive a bit since my damage is awesome and FA. Lol Cambeleg i think just on the ground. Find a "very good level" and search it all and cant find anything no out of level mobs or gear of any value. Im like WTF no vault even just monster one or anything. So i go to map mode... hmm wtf a brown book? Could it be... Samurai 4th? .. nah Not so good luck tho.. trump 4th.

Well full inventory of goodies and on next dangerous level i find an Adult ethereal Drake chasing me. Only what 20+ level out of depth.. kinda tempting but i bail.

So i visit next town and go do the orc/doom qs. Then off to Morivant and do the l25 q's since im so geared and damage is high. No speed pots tho. So Mimic room i teleport next the mimics and hack away. First hit and they summon Hagen. Thx for the spear. I'm prolly doing as much damage already or more than my l38 monk was. Well i finish the l25 q's and go to angband after briefly visiting Castle first levels and killing wormtongue for 2 epics lol chest and the wis helmet. So off to anband finally and start from l1... i only dive like 2 stairs and open a chest and Soulsword pops up DOING.

Well i did visit dragon cave a bit at ~char level 26-27 killed quite a few mobs and low level uniques but got nada. Then i was too scared to continue and went back to traditional mode. ( I never do dragon cave since its borderline abuse just thought i try what its like).

Well more special drops followed but cant part from my black market items yet due to nice resistances.

3rd book found update; 36 castle excellent level. Nothing special about the level just the book on the ground and about 4 uniques on the level. So OP that dont even have to speed up for the uniques just smash em with normal melee in a few rounds at speed +3.

Weirdly enough my stats are almost capped or capped due to gear but my underlying stats are really weak. Havent found hardly any stat potions. Str for example only 18/35.

Str cap only /70 and char /120 blah :). Life rate is 108 though so pretty decent. Since gear seems to compensate i guess it doesnt matter. Could try to nexus swap i suppose.

See that ring in my inventory. Went a level down Ishikawa was waiting and dropped zantetsuken :). And the ring is +7 speed. Pimp. Cant wear sword though since it would blow my resistances wide open.

This must be now my luckiest char ever.

Out of the pits: Neck and boots added. Could probably clear castle and bull gates/killing fields with ease but suppose i level a bit just in case. Cant remember much about the q's anyways. ~3 greater titans in castle if i recall right.

Well getting moronified 24/7 again and curses are getting to be a problem. Not having regeneration makes getting hp back quite a pain. Drops have been shit only new item i've gotten in who knows how many levels is Jacks cloak.

I guess it would be about time to switch to DW but been waiting and waiting that i would get that one item that would help covering whatever resistances would leave unattended. Shards and darkness seem to be the most problematic ones.

Finally found 4th book @49. Regen was a real problem. However just before the book i found Slayer on castle final level. Damn regen+vampiric was better than i remembered.

I suppose overall i switch back to katanas but for now slayer is doing fine. damage comparison seems similar altho katanas ofcourse have more dice and the sharpness. Cant really remember how that worked tho.

Curiously i found like the biggest vault ever on DL53 while CL42 myself. Spend like 2-3 hours the because it contained like 30 bosses from Gachapin to l90 mobs. I killed about 15ish ungoliant being the highest. Then i was running out of consumables and was in trouble handling the inventory. Earned 2 levels there too. My main goal was to reach the 5d5 sword in the middle but one would guess a fake weap :). Didnt actually net any gear except light slots there.

Oh yeah and i got moronified and blasted to below 18 wis by all so nice ELDRICH horror. Even some fucking Star vampires and byakae blast my ass repeatedly. This really needs a fix.

Oh yeah had to switch to DW when i hit DL60ish. The damage wasnt cutting it anymore. Well i got the mobs down but health got blasted low and regen was slow. Lacking shard resistance so better avoid those cyberdemons.

DL 69 ->RoS +10 DL 72 tiamat and friends down. Various epics switched to lohegrin because i got supernice polymorph potion +4 STR and Supercomputer :). STR and dex stay capped. Seems that slayer has penalty to hit if wielded 1 handed. I seem to recall something about that i suppose too heavy.

I could switch to Anglarang and wear charmed pendant to get regen+ 3 x reflect shield. I would lose the vampiric quality of the slayer tho which is real nice :). Damage would be tad lower but to hit tad better.

Neither setup has shard resistance tho.

Shitloads of gear in bank but cba figure out other setups. Just have to wait for something new to drop.

So DL76 quest was angmar. I enter the level and its a angel/paladin vault next to me and angmar right there too and summons a stack of nazguls on me or maybe they were his escorts. Since its an open level i decide to teleport and land some spaces away right next to an mixed vault and 2 more uniques. Also level seems to be small about twice the size of normal mine level. And its open. Now i start to get worried. I only have 3 destruction and i decide to wipe out the vault and maybe 2 of the other uniques. Well i only get one. I'm worried the angel vault will start to summon shitloads of mobs to fight the evil dudes. My starting point got already filled with like 50 mobs. Some balance and chaos wyrms too. Well on the sides of the vault its full of rubble and i eventually make my way there and dig a summoning corridor. Even so i have to occasionally teleport around in an effort to save potions and scrolls. I get angmar down but surrounded by his nazguls and some wyrms i have to teleport again without looting. There's a ring of speed and a cloak that look intresting so i have to fight around kill various nazgul and wyrms while down to like 10 teleport now.

Eventually i succeed in looting and notice that the angel vault wasnt full of ultraelite but just various other versions and not so nasty angels either. Well they can still summon but fortunately only few of them ever leave the vault whcih i clear in the end. Ring was only +1 better than what i had.

So i go visit some quest i left behind. Royal crypt went fine except the druj room. I forgot that teleports from the druj rooms just bounce you between the rooms and almost get toasted. Noticed genocide/destruction/earthquake dont work either. I wonder if thats all quests or just this one.

Reading old samurai post i notice i dont have to carry the books-> FUCK. That was a massive waste of space.

DL80 i start killing emperor quyltwhatever and ofcourse it summons massive lichs/balance wyrms and uniques. Before i can make move 1 after opening a tunnel to his sight. Druj too for more summons. Well Gerald goes down and i dont seem to get amberite curse too often. I try to make them suicide on me on musou to have antimagic up but unfortunately Gerald tried to flee after my last reply hits so had to attack. Anyways after clearing i get to the emperor and his trustu druj next to him and earthquake strike. Wtf emperor gets destructed by stone. Didnt know that was possible for unique. But i guess its just the target of the strike cant get embedded but mobs around it can? Well i searched the level up and down but it was gone.

My speed is pretty awesome but melee seems a bit weaker than it should. Scared of going deeper without shard resistance always on. But i cant seem to make a kit that would cover all needed. Shard/blindness and regeneration seem to be the problem.

Alright. Whoever put the lameass tolkien secret question on forum registration is a sad loser. Seriously get a life.

Oh well back to business at hand. Figured i'd scum some mutations for kicks since i've lost all i had due to moronify and drinking potions and getting mutations removed even though i hardly had any. So i got useless or nice ones only. Of course had the moronify as always before i started. But element protection showed up so i figured i'd stay moronified since its hopeless to attempt to play without it anyways.

I was too lazy to drop my RoS +12 which got destroyed while doing it. Yeah so its not just lightning that destroys rings. Was unable to get my stats to switch from nexus breaths tho. 108 life with only 18/70 on str and 18/90 on wis is hurting a bit. I wonder what are my chance to get same or better life rate with my 5 new life potions?. Rarely seem to even get 108 life rate on original roll.

So been killing uniques at 85-87 levels but wanted dont show up. Found 1 artifact creation which i read on +14/14 diamond edge and got crap. + charisma and some shit like that; its in my house. Ofcourse right after i did it killed cantoras and got the helm and then i could have used the scroll instead on balance dragon scale mail which would have enabled me to stop wielding the darned soulsword already. Killing cyberdemons takes ages with shield and Soulsword (for shard res).

Switched to little less speed and tulkas ring for max stats and better melee power. The speed activations seems to have pretty nice duration.

Just before posting this finally got a Rod of Healing. Havent found single staves yet either. Only the quest reward which blew up the first time i went to dungeon with it.

Even the small increase in melee power is noticeable but i need more. Destroyer would be barely doable with current power and would eat massive healing.

I wonder if its the case in Heng as tome spoiler said that weapon bonuses are meningless when creating an artifact. I recall forum people saying they try to get best possible +to hit/dam Diamond edge before trying. I wonder if they start dropping any more @DL90, only seen 1 with this char so far and i got it early.

Diamond Edges are native to DL90, and rarity 16. You won't see many of them, and catching them before DL90 is just a bit lucky. Yeah, artifacts keep the native plusses (or increase them) so it is better to start with a Diamond Edge (+28, +28) than (+14, +14). Still, getting total crap seems rather normal ...

You've been riding that damn Soulsword all game ;P Generated with Poison resistance, I can see why. But shards resistance has been hiding from you, I guess. There's always something ... until there isn't and the game is over. Good Luck!

So grinded R'lyeh for drops quite long but got nothing except met lots of uniques. Then i realized i have most of the artifacts and i hated the open water levels so i went for the l88 quest. Unfortunately it looked like destroyer or Unicorn for the quest mob. I suppose game chooses them early or something i never met destroyer in R'lyeh i did meet babble and unicorn but fighting on open water levels was pretty hopeless.

So i did destroyer and stairs down met unicorn. Got the bastard to 4 starts and it summoned nodens and bahamut. Crap. So teleport out destruct nodens and back towards the cow. I go up and the horde of high wyrms starts approaching so i count the tiles and notice unicorn is 12 tiles up and a bit to the side from middle. So i destruct and fuck... its the last tile on the oval that gets hit and the cow is gone :(. Later i notice there were some genocide scrolls on the ground on the level which i had forgotten about since i didnt carry any.

Chris, have you fixed Eldritch horror on your version? Damn moronify is pissing me off royal. Meeting a demon pit is like guaranteed moron+ stats lower. Atleast put in some method of resisting it. Maybe sustain wis prevent the thing or something. And then add some sustain wis gear :).

On 6.11.2010 14:47 chris wrote:
My idea is to do some sort of monster level check. So early on, ghasts will affect you, but not in the end game (i.e., you will get a saving throw based on the power of the monster). I haven't checked the code yet ... But, yeah, demon pits might be trouble! Some of my characters just avoid R'lyeh, like if I am a spellcaster with some nice mutations.

On 6.11.2010 15:49 antiguard@gawab.com wrote:
Well just met a demon pit in angband and counted that i got Eldricth horro 8 times from that. 2 times by Ghast. And thats with superb saving throw. There is just so many "normal" demon mobs around that no matter how good your saving throw is it doesnt make a bit of difference. As i recall antimagic gives you 95% saving throw and i recall one character who used it all the time and still got mind blasted regular.

It doesnt really matter how good the save is .. with telepathy and demon pits you are going to see so many various demons that you will be moronified all the time.

On 6.11.2010 16:12 chris wrote:
I think you are correct ... I'm looking at the code now and I see that you do get a saving throw that is a function of the monster's level. Your saving throw is 96, I think, and against a ghast, you will save (96 - 9) = 87% of the time. But, meet 100 ghasts, and, well ... Against a Great Unclean One, your save is only (96 - 31) = 65%. Meet a pit full of ghasts, bloodthirsters, great unclean ones, ... your bound to become a moron!

Also, you need to make multiple saving throws. In many respects, you are better off failing your first saving throw, since then you get confused or possibly hallucinated, but both effects are resistable. But if you make that save, then you need to roll more saving throws to avoid higher effects! So, ironically, poor saving throw characters might be better off. To get a moron, you need to:
Fail an initial saving throw.
Make one to avoid mind blast.
Make one to avoid stat drain.
Make one to avoid brain smash.
Make one to avoid amnesia.
Fail one to get mutation.

Then, if I am reading this correctly, if you resist fear and chaos, you will get the moron mutation. If you didn't resist fear, you would be waaay more likely to pick up cowardice, unless you already had it. Ditto with chaos resistance and the hallucination.

So, going fail, make, make, make, make, fail on your saves seems improbable, but if you roll it enough, then it is bound to happen. But you see how a poor saving throw might help you out as your odds of making 4 in a row diminish. And thus you see how the ghast (87%) might be more annoying than the unclean one (65%).

I don't have a good fix :) Perhaps I will just make the Moron less likely to happen. Right now, for your character, it is 100% guaranteed once you go through the improbably FMMMMF guantlet of saving throws. I think I will bump it down to 20% and see how that plays.

On 6.11.2010 18:20 Antiguard@gawab.com wrote:
One intresting fix could be that you incorporate the game kill counter to the effect and make character resist all effects or some from mobs that you have killed say 10 individuals. Ok the common mobs you get 10 fast but it takes a while to meet 10 bloodthirsters/star spawn/warp demons. Even demon pits have like 2 only.

I would say most higher level chars run 24/7 with both fear and chaos resistance so that makes moron effect even more common. I have also noticed that the few times i've gone for a cure i'm more likely to become moronified than get the other effects first. Usually its cure and next effect i get is moron and after that i start to get the other effects.

On 7.11.2010 01:46 chris wrote:
Sorry to clog your character dump :) I ended up making you immune to the horror if your character level is 10 greater than the monster's level. That, and the change to make the Moron 1/5th as likely should be enough, but I won't really know until I try one out. You really should be affected by the high level guys, but I think it is the low level ones that do the most damage, since you run into so many ghasts and polyps.

Don't spend so much time in R'lyeh :D :D :D

Couple of weeks break on this got kinda bored hunting unicorny and nodens. Always showing up together. Well eventually found nodens alone and it didnt summon unicorn so he was toast. Now if i could find a decent level to fight korny :(. Massive dragons and angels seem to show up too often. Those better than 11-12 speedrings seem to be quite rare as well cant seem to get any drop. Or any decent gear for that matter. Found gloves of genji tho but cant wear em due to resistances.

So finally killed Unicorny. Took quite a while. Best way seemed to be summon corridors preferably short just 3 spaces and spam wind blast. On longer corridor abuse crap summons to block the cows path. He doesnt seem to kill them too fast and you can recover sp. My low mana means quite poor SP recovery since it seems to be sp/2 per concentrate if i recall right. Took quite while to do and considering how many rounds of melee i managed to avoid with wind blast - must be nice with some less suitable classes.

Anyways after that i went through multiple stairs and use jewel + autodestroyer to locate rings/vaults and finally hit 5d5 long sword -> ringil. First OP item for this char. True its not that high damage but the speed is sweet and against mobs that resist electricity and undead its nice. Other than that i try to kill angels and wyrms that drop nice and move on.

Suppose i could win now but still have arena unfinished and babble alive in dungeon as well. Only killed it once with monk in a small level back in the day. Didnt seem very doable with samurai in large levels the few times i met it. Havent tried poison needling tho. Samurai Rush atleast gives you a nice way of reaching it in arena but wont get too many hits before i'm dead from spells.

Oh yeah and i found this weird amulet of charisma of flame? I guess someone add it to 1.7.0. Dont remember seeing it before and its not on spoiler either. Anyways resist fire/cold and shards and +4 speed(and char). I have quite many gear options but this seems to be the most suitable for me while still keeping reflection.
